What is a Basket (Cart)?

A shopping basket, commonly referred to as a cart, is a temporary container that helps the customer view all the food and beverages they have added to buy and proceed with their purchase at the end. Restaurants most often use it on websites, mobile applications, and kiosks.

A basket typically contains:

  • Choice of menu items
  • Quantity per item
  • Add-ons or customizations
  • Special requests
  • Subtotal & estimated tax

It gives your customer the ability to amend their order until reaching the checkout stage.

How Does a Basket (Cart) Work in Restaurants?

The basket holds everything that is selected by the customer until the customer decides to proceed with the purchase.

The process follows:

  • The customer navigates through the digital menu of the restaurant.
  • Menu items are added to the cart.
  • The customer may edit, remove, or confirm items in the cart.
  • Discounts, promo codes, or loyalty points are applied.
  • Customer checkout is done, and the payment is complete.
  • The order is submitted to the restaurant POS system to process and prepare for cooking.
  • The basket is cleared after the order has been successfully created.
