What is a KDS Monitor?

A KDS monitor is the actual screen hardware your kitchen display system runs on, the physical display mounted in your kitchen that shows incoming orders instead of printed tickets. While "KDS" refers to the whole system, "KDS monitor" usually just means the screen itself.

These are usually attached at each station, the grill, the fryer, the salad station, so cooks can see orders relevant to their section without turning their neck to look at one central screen across the kitchen. Bigger kitchens often run multiple monitors linked together, so an order shows up at every station that needs to prep.

Most KDS monitors are built tough on purpose, since a kitchen is a rough environment for electronics. Heat, grease, steam, and constant touching all take a toll, so these screens are usually sealed, heat-resistant, and easy to wipe down, not your average office monitor.

When you're setting one up, size and placement matter more than people expect. A too-small screen doesn't work well, and your cooks are squinting during a rush. KDS monitor fixed in the wrong spot creates a problem. It's worth actually standing in your kitchen and thinking through your line's flow before deciding where these screens go, rather than just putting them wherever there's an open spot on the wall.
