What is a Payment Gateway?
A payment gateway is a secure technology used by restaurants to accept and process digital payments by transmitting transaction information between the POS, the customer's bank, and the payment processor; it is the bridge that authorizes payments made with credit or debit cards or through online payment methods.
The Process of Using a Payment Gateway in the Restaurant Industry
When the customer completes a purchase, that information is sent to the payment gateway from the POS system. The payment gateway encrypts that information and sends it to the payment processor (the company that processes credit cards for businesses). The payment processor contacts the customer’s bank to verify that they have sufficient funds to complete the purchase. If there are sufficient funds, the payment processor will either approve or decline the transaction.
As soon as the payment processor has a response, it sends that decision back through the payment gateway to the POS system. The result of this transaction can be completed within seconds, allowing for the payment process to be fast, secure, seamless, and enabling the ability to buy at any restaurant, whether in person or online.
