What is a Restaurant P&L Template?

A profit and loss statement, is the report that tells you whether your restaurant actually made revenue in a given period. If you don't have one, this is the single most important document you must have, because it helps you to decide so many things and plan everything in advance.

A basic template breaks down into a few sections. First, your revenue, all the money coming in from food, drinks, and maybe catering or merchandise. Then your cost of goods sold, meaning what you spent on the food and drinks themselves. After that comes labor, your biggest expense besides food. Then operating costs like rent, utilities, insurance, and marketing. Whatever's left at the end is your profit, or your loss.

Most owners look at this monthly, but a lot of the sharper operators check it weekly too, especially the food and labor numbers, doing so help them catch the problems early.

A simple spreadsheet works fine, or your POS system and accounting software might already generate one for you. What matters more is actually looking at it regularly and comparing it month to month, so you notice when something's going wrong way before it becomes a real problem.
