What is an Item Builder?

An item builder is a POS feature that allows restaurants to create customizable menu items with multiple components such as ingredients, modifiers, and add-ons. In most cases, there may be multiple variations of a single product.

This is done mostly with items that are more customizable on the menu, such as pizza, burgers, bowls, sandwiches, and combo meals.

How an Item Builder Works in a Restaurant POS System?

When a customer selects an item in the POS system, this will trigger an action that opens the Item Builder interface to select their modifiers or add-ons according to the customer's request.

For example, if a customer wants to place an order for a burger from their menu, the Item Builder will contain:

  • Type of bread
  • Cheese options
  • Extra Toppings
  • Cooking preference
  • Sides

After the customer has made their choice, the POS will calculate the price and send the order to the kitchen. This improves order accuracy, reduces mistakes, and speeds up the ordering process for both staff and customers.
